Why I selected my topic? And my research process
I selected the Great Barrier Reef as my research topic because I love nature. The world has supplied man with many gifts, and I believe it is our responsibility to return this favor by doing what we can to maintain the uniqueness of its environment.
From the beginning, I knew what I wanted to research about the Great Barrier Reef-- what is causing its death and what it will do for Australia's economy. During the research process, my thesis never completely changed, but what I thought I knew evolved into the heart breaking truth and due to this new found knowledge, my thesis expanded. I thought the reef was dead based off of social media posts circulating twitter this year (2016), but, in reality, it is dying. My thesis was no longer focused on solely on the economic aspects, it also focused on what we can do to stop reef deterioration and preventing future damage.
What surprised me the most while composing my research was lack of support from one of Australia's senators, Paulina Hanson. She didn't disregard the events at hand, but did not see the future problems that will occur without help. Hanson did not enjoy hearing the "lies" leading scientists discovered through extensive research on the reefs current condition. In addition to lack of senator support, I was surprised by my over all findings. I knew what was happening, but reading it and facing the ugly truth head on hurt. We have destroyed an ecosystem supporting thousands of species, some endangered.
Australia is attempting to fix their reef problem through governments funds, but this isn't enough. Everyone must take the extra step towards environmental friendly activities to stop the bleaching process.
The extensive research conducted opened my eyes to bigger issues the world faces due to our wasteful ways. If we continue down the same path we have for years, an ecosystem as special as the Great Barrier Reef and many more will cease to exist.
